The Planetary Boundaries framework identifies nine processes that regulate Earth’s stability and resilience. The 2025 assessment finds that seven are beyond the safe operating space. Crossing a boundary does not mean instant collapse — it means rising systemic risk.
Climate Change
Greenhouse gases change Earth’s energy balance, warming the atmosphere, oceans and land.
Biosphere Integrity
Biodiversity is not only a collection of species. It is the living network that keeps ecosystems functioning and resilient.
Land-System Change
Forests, grasslands and wetlands regulate climate, water and biodiversity. Converting them changes how the Earth system works.
Freshwater Change
Freshwater includes visible “blue water” in rivers and lakes and “green water” held in soils and used by plants.
Biogeochemical Flows
Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential nutrients, but too much of them disrupts rivers, lakes, coastal waters and ecosystems.
Ocean Acidification
The ocean absorbs CO₂. This slows atmospheric warming, but changes seawater chemistry and reduces carbonate available to shell-building organisms.
Novel Entities
Novel entities include synthetic chemicals, plastics and other human-made substances or materials introduced into the Earth system.
Atmospheric Aerosol Loading
Aerosols are tiny particles in the atmosphere from sources such as combustion, dust, fires and industrial pollution.
Stratospheric Ozone
The stratospheric ozone layer absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.
